Police believe Barry John Faulkner, dubbed Australia’s “Catch Me If You Can” bandit, is luring victims to Sydney airport. Since April, a dozen people have fallen for his trap.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal the 59-year-old – a registered child sex offender who has a history of child sex abuse dating back to the 1960s – is being sought by the Australian Federal Police.

The many faces of Barry John Faulkner

The latest guise of Faulkner, who has conned people while posing as a doctor, an airline pilot, a CIA agent, an American military officer and a member of The Monkees, is as an employee of a Sydney airport-based courier firm.

He persuaded his victims that he could supply them with cheap motorcycles, including expensive Italian Ducatis, perfume and jewellery.

It is believed he was also conducting similar acts at Brisbane airport in January. He was also being sought in NSW on other warrants.

The AFP yesterday issued a warning for people to be on the lookout for a man offering motorcyles, perfumes or jewelery at Sydney airport. He may appear to be as a Worker for the airport.

“Airport uniform police at Sydney have had two reports of people being approached by a man who offered special deals on goods that were never produced,” a spokesman said.

“On each occasion the man offered to purchase items such as a Ducati motorcycle, perfume and watches from auctions of unclaimed goods from the airport,” he said.

In 2006, Faulkner was sentenced to 16 months’ imprisonment for child sex abuse and failing to report to police under the Child Protection Register as a child sex offender.

The court was told his criminal history in NSW alone stretched to 30 pages.

Faulkner once featured on the television program Australia’s Most Wanted and at one stage was wanted in five states at the same time.

REAL ONE

ONE of Australia’s most notorious fraudsters has returned to Sydney to prey on unsuspecting commuters.

He persuaded his victims that he could supply them with cheap motorcycles, including expensive Italian Ducatis, perfume and jewellery.

He presented forged paperwork from the courier company and told them he had access to the unclaimed goods that had passed through Australian Customs, saying the goods would be destroyed if he did not sell them.

His meeting point for the transactions has been Sydney’s international airport, drawing the attention of AFP in charge of airport security who have received reports of Faulkner’s frauds.

It is believed other victims may have reported the frauds to police stations around Sydney.

His most recent fraud occurred this month when he took $3000 as an up-front payment for goods at the airport before disappearing.

It is believed he was also conducting a similar scam at Brisbane airport in January. He was also being sought in NSW on other warrants.

While not naming Faulkner, the AFP warned people to be on the lookout for a con artist operating at Sydney airport.

  1. The term interactive TV is being able to take control of what you watch by downloading your own shows from the Internet. It is like having your own channels.
  2. Interactive TV would now be called TV 2.0 because you can customize it and change it just like web 2.0 tools.
  3. I think that a positive would be not having anything you like on so you’re never bored out of your wits, another would be that you only pay for what you use. A negative would be, because people are watching TV all the time, nobody would be doing anything else, everybody would get fat. You also have to use broadband to  download it.
  4. The original Apple TV did not have direct access to itunes but now does, it now has better settings with HD and DVD.

Individual Task 4 Thursday, May 1 2008

  1. The Dalai Lama is a teacher and scholar to the Buddhist faith. He is also known as “the peacemaker from Tibet”. He is a world symbol for a non violent response to aggression. I think that he is a good person who tries to tutor others in the Buddhist faith.
  2. I do not think that the Dalai Lama is showing examples of moral integrity because it seems to me that if the going gets too tough, he will back down and resign. This to me says that he is more a teacher than a leader.

  1. The purpose of using youtube as a source of digital media advertising is because it is easy to access, easy to use and thousands of people access it each day.
  2. Rather than people having to wait for the six o’clock news every night, they can just look it up on these sorts of sites and find out straight away. Today’s society is all about quick, efficient and easy services which would help to increase the popularity of these things. People can put on more news and advertisements more regularly and also. Advertising companies can also post their information everywhere for anybody to see.

  1. The term digital media refers to electronic media, for example things like podcasts and myspace. This is used opposed to the analog media like newspapers and radio.
  2. Digital media has evolved over the last 5-10 years by computers becoming much faster and being able to store more, the internet has also become much faster with more and more sites being added (most of which are junk) and being able to upload videos onto the net so easily.
  3. Digital newspapers would be very popular because people can access it whenever they want and don’t have to pay for it.

Individual Task 3 Wednesday, Apr 9 2008

  1. Moral integrity is being morally complete because another word for integrity is “wholeness.” It is being honest and moral in all area’s of your life, (moral is knowing the difference between right and wrong and acting upon it).
  2. Maximillian Kolbe is regarded as a Christian exemplary of moral integrity because Jesus says that the highest virtue is love. The highest expression of love is to lay down one’s life for a friend, which is exactly what Kolbe did.
  3. The ethical actions/principles that Kolbe demonstrated are:
  • continually comforting and reassuring his fellow prisoner’s saying that there is still hope and all bad things come to an end.
  • taking confessions from his fellow prisoner’s and smuggling in bread and wine for secret masses
  • he undertook the task of moving the bodies of the tortured and dead
  • he showed compassion for those less fortunate than himself
  • he comforted the other nine men as they were about to die

4. If I was to ask myself, what would Jesus do? I know that the answer would be what Maximillian did, lay down his life for someone else. So, I think that he did the right thing.

John 15:13 – Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends

Scenario 1  – If I was with a big group as well I would try and calm the youths down and stop them. But if i was by myself, there wouldn’t be much I could do to stop it so I would call the cops and report the incident.

Scenario 2- I would reply that if she liked me more for that, she would be liking me for the wrong reasons. I would outline the risks of getting caught and what a stupid ideas it was.  Then I would just walk home and forget about it. If she didn’t speak to me again, that would be her problem.
